Description
Neomycin is a broad-spectrum bactericidal aminoglycoside antibiotic with strong activity against members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, particularly Escherichia coli. Its mode of action occurs at the ribosomal level. When administered orally, only a small fraction is absorbed systemically, while the remaining active compound stays within the gastrointestinal tract. Neomycin is not inactivated by food or enzymes, making it highly effective for enteric bacterial infections.
Indications
NEO 720 WSP is indicated for the prevention and treatment of bacterial enteritis in calves, sheep, goats, and poultry caused by bacteria susceptible to neomycin, including E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter species.
Contra indications
Do not use in animals with hypersensitivity to neomycin.
Avoid administration to animals with severely impaired renal function.
Do not administer to animals with active microbial digestion.
Not intended for poultry producing eggs for human consumption.
Side effects
Typical toxic effects associated with neomycin, including nephrotoxicity, deafness, and neuromuscular blockade, are generally not produced when administered orally. No additional side effects are expected when the recommended dosage is followed correctly.
Dosage
For oral administration through drinking water.
Calves, sheep and goats
10 mg neomycin sulphate per kg body weight (equivalent to 14 mg/kg NEO 720 WSP) for 3–5 days.
Poultry
1 g per 7–8 litres of drinking water for 3–5 days.
Withdrawal times
For meat:
Calves, goats, sheep, and swine: 21 days
Poultry: 7 days
